Hip Resurfacing

An alternative to total hip replacement that preserves more bone and is ideal for younger, active patients

What it is

Hip resurfacing is an alternative to total hip replacement, often suited for younger, active patients with hip arthritis. Instead of completely removing the femoral head, the surgeon reshapes it and caps it with a smooth metal covering. The hip socket is also fitted with a metal cup to provide a low-friction joint. Hip resurfacing preserves more of the patient’s natural bone structure and may allow for greater hip stability compared to a full hip replacement.

Symptoms it treats

Hip resurfacing is recommended for patients who have:

  • Severe pain from arthritis, particularly in younger individuals
  • Reduced hip mobility and discomfort during physical activities
  • Symptoms unresponsive to other non-surgical treatments

Postoperative care

The recovery for hip resurfacing includes:

  • Gradual return to weight-bearing activities as pain allows
  • Physiotherapy exercises to strengthen surrounding muscles and improve flexibility
  • Regular follow-ups to monitor the placement and wear of the metal components

Risks and complications

Hip resurfacing carries specific risks, such as:

  • Potential release of metal ions into the bloodstream from the metal-on-metal interface
  • Risk of femoral neck fracture if excessive stress is placed on the hip early on
  • Loosening or displacement of the metal cap
  • Osteonecrosis (bone death) if blood supply to the bone is compromised
